Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Verification Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Verification Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: What is VIN Verification?

A: VIN Verification is the process of physically inspecting and confirming a vehicle’s identification number (VIN) and current odometer reading to ensure accuracy before titling, registering, or transferring ownership of the vehicle. It is often required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) when a vehicle is brought into Florida from another state or has never been titled here.

Q2: Who can perform a VIN Verification?

A: In Florida, VIN verifications may be completed by authorized individuals such as a Florida Notary Public, a law enforcement officer, a licensed car dealer, or a Florida DMV employee.
As a commissioned Florida Notary Public, I am authorized to conduct official VIN verifications for individuals and dealerships.

Q3: Is VIN Verification available online or virtually?

A: No. VIN Verification must be completed in person. Federal and state law require a physical inspection of both the vehicle’s VIN plate and the current odometer reading. This process cannot be completed via remote or online notarization under any circumstances.

Q4: What do I need to bring to my appointment?

A: Please have the following ready:

  • The vehicle itself (must be physically present for inspection).

  • A valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport).

  • Any supporting documents such as the vehicle’s title, registration, or bill of sale (if applicable).

  • The completed or blank form HSMV 82042 (Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification form). If you don’t have it, I can provide one at your appointment.

Q5: Where do VIN Verifications take place?

A: I offer flexible appointment options for your convenience:

  • In-Office Appointments: Port St. Lucie, FL

  • Mobile Appointments: I can travel to your preferred location — home, business, or dealership — to complete the inspection on-site.

Q6: How long does a VIN Verification take?

A: Most VIN verifications take 10–15 minutes, depending on vehicle accessibility and document preparation.

Q7: How much does VIN Verification cost?

A:

  • In-Office Verification: $20 flat fee

  • Mobile Verification: Starting at $20 plus a travel fee (based on distance and location)
Payment is due at the time of service, and receipts are provided for your records or submission to the DMV.

Q8: Why is VIN Verification required?

A: VIN verification ensures that the vehicle being titled or registered is authentic, not stolen, and that its identifying information matches official records. It helps prevent fraud and guarantees accurate documentation for your vehicle’s title and registration.

Q9: Do you provide the completed VIN form to the DMV?

A: Once the inspection is complete, you will receive your signed and sealed HSMV 82042 form. You’ll then submit this form directly to your local tax collector’s office or DMV when completing your title or registration process.
